Tally Youngblood is desperate to turn 16. Where she lives, that means turning Pretty (yes, with a capital P). Since she was a child, she has snuck out to watch the Pretties party in Pretty Town across the river. This is where she'll move to soon. A few weeks before the operation she meets Shay, though. Tally finds out that Shay wants to sneak out to a place called The Smoke, and she wants her to come with her. Tally isn't sure and stays behind. But Shay leaves her instructions in case she changes her mind, and that is when Tally meets Special Circumstances. As the name says, they deal with special circumstances and they want Tally to find her friends, becauseThe Smoke is a place where people go if they don't want the operation to turn pretty. Tally is supposed to follow the trail that her friend left, find the smoke and reveal its location. The big question is, though, will she do it? She'd betray her friends. But let's not forget the love story (obviously there is one!) which will make everything more difficult.
Uglies throws you a lot of questions about societies. It criticises and questions the thing" of turning 16. In America that is like turning 18 in Germany. Every country celebrates one birthday as a very important one. But the question is, does that one birthday really change a lot? Do you suddenly become an adult? More pretty? More grown up? Uglies has the classical ingredients of sciencce ficition - rebells, governments that have weird ideals etc, but this is one of my favourite series, I have to say. I'd definetly recommed it! - Nicole
