What I like about this novel is the way the story line is developed, and especially how the relationships between people are developed. The further you read, the more inter-connected everything seems. The characters, even the minor ones, gain more depth and understanding. This makes the story line seem more realistic and adds substance to the book.
Antje Babendererde always uses the same topic, but the way she develops her characters give every book a very unique touch. As far as I can judge, she stays close to the truth when writing about native cultures and weaves background information into her story without disrupting the flow. This helps to reflect upon the interaction between different cultures and how we personally engage with them. She touches the issue of tradition vs modern world, and shows how those two can go together. I can recommend Rain Song to everyone who is looking for an easy but not superficial book to read. To be honest, Rain Song is nothing extrodinarily special but I still enjoy re-reading it (and Babendererde's books in general) and it is one of my favourites from her. - Nicole
